MONIQUE
Saw Precious today. Je-zus! It is a fucking hard film to watch, but Monique’s performance is worth it. It’s a very good film, but she is the sole aspect (in my opinion) that is great. And really, the other good performances in the film are in response to her. Her scene towards the end, with the hand gesture - it’s brilliant. You get to see a character, who at this point in the...

All My Friends... Like That Song In That New Noah...
Ok, what are we doing for New Years Eve? I’m thinking, super simple drop-in-style drinks somewhere. Local 510 or Milk Tiger? Angela says somewhere where we can “eat ribs and burgers, yuuuuuuhhhm” and with that I agree. @jfsmeadows and @benmillen, Thioni - are you guys still in town? Lesley, Laurna? Rey, Ramin? Preems? Brendan and Jen? Or, BREN? Jamie - are you going to Sundre or...

It really wouldn’t be Christmas Eve dinner (the big dinner in my fam) without the following: Me taking HOURS to cook a meal I have never tried before, making everyone wait because oh I dunno, I didn’t bother with a recipe or similar, and have wasted tons of expensive ingredients and set off the fire alarm and spilled chicken stock all over the floor and bruised my arm on the counter as...

Adele Lurves The Holidays Part Zwei
Or really, Adele just loves holiday-related cable: Uncle Buck on one channel, Jamie Oliver pranking Gennaro on another… man alive! On the same level as that Obama special from last night. …What would you do without my blog, right? Anyway, they just pulsed bay leaves, vanilla, lemon and orange zest, cinnamon and nutmeg, put it through a sieve and made it into a ‘sugar’ and...

"Hi-5 Bo!"
You know who I love? Oprah. Michelle Obamaz. BO! Also love over the top gingerbread houses. Op’s Christmas at the White House special = so much fun for me! Also, have made french toast with the stollen. I shhhtttooohhhl the idea from… no kidding, came up with that on my own, just wanted to make that obvious (and never tiring, right?) joke. Love how dazzled Oprah is by this visit. Me...

Mammadele (Imagine My Great Southern Accent)
Drinking the Lo Vielh (http://www.closdugravillas.com/thewine.htm) and eating toasted stolen (made by Aviv… ps. Avivie, is there marzipan in this? SO TASTY! Glad I bought 5) with salty butter and watching a show on the making of/literary accuracy of the new Sherlock Holmes. Huge fun of the Jeremy Brett TV version, but this looks good. Tosker (TOSKER!) from Our Friends In The North is in it!...

The Single Best Sentence I Have Ever Submitted For...
“Only the girl seemed really into it.” - Me. Used in an essay response for an exam. Come on, it was about the dance sequence in Band of Outsiders. (I’m kind of right?) The essay was actually not bad. Like, I re-read it and started giggling. Granted, I was giggling because I bombed the other 75% of the exam. Good thing I find my own failures REALLY REALLY FUNNY, right?

Good Day For Nerdy Links
Favorite Vulture headline of 2009: “Robin Hood Trailer: Gladiator II” http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/12/robin_hood_trailer_gladiator_i.html I remember seeing Gladiator and Robin Hood: Men in Tights with Grandpa in theatres, so I AM SO ON BOARD FOR THIS. SUGGESTION
Whoever is in charge of www.nerdboyfriend.com should be gagging over The Wilby Conspiracy (1975) - hopefully they can find an amazing picture, I sure as hell can’t. This movie has it all: Michael Caine, Sidney Poitier AND Rutger Hauer. A-maz-ing!

Ghosts of Shopping Past
hodgepodgelodge: Landscaping overgrows, walls develop mildew, ceilings cave in—a building can be shut down, but that doesn’t make it go away. Brian Ulrich’s photographs of closed-down malls and big-box retail stores reveal the potential ghost towns lying inside successful shopping complexes all across America. Ghosts of Shopping Past

Mythical White Stag
MacGruber apparently the best SNL film since Wayne’s World… according to blogger. http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/12/blogger_macgruber_movie_best_s.html This is why I love the Daily Mail: “Mythical White Stage found in the forests of Gloucestershire” WITH PICTURES! Holy Shit. The Decade IS Over!
NY Mag’s cultural moments of the decade: http://nymag.com/arts/all/aughts/62506/ Decade did start pretty well: 2000 - January 21: Mary Harron’s American Psycho premieres at Sundance, presaging 2008’s Wall Street bloodbath. Star Christian Bale becomes aughts box-office wunderkind/anger-management poster boy. March 22: NBC cancels short-lived but hugely influential Freaks and Geeks, firing...

Jesus fuck. I love a lot of British stuff that they over there - “across the pond” as it were - would probably find pretty tasteless. Or just ordinary. Perhaps a bit of both? Well whatever UK, that’s just me. I guess you could call this a “guilty obsession” but I wouldn’t. I would call it “fun aspect of my weekly routine number 14” - yes, I check...

Watched This With My Hands Clasped To My Chest,...
Just got out of Fantastic Mr. Fox. It is stupendous! A few thoughts before bed: When was the last time that I saw such a clever film? Michael Gambon is a terrific actor. Thankful that I still have that Brie De Meaux fox-with-a-bowtie sticker on my broken phone. Never replacing this phone. Just Some Stuffs
Jesus. Watching Christopher Columbus (Dir. David MacDonald, 1949) and it is the worst ever. Maybe I’m just food drunk, but shit this is terrible. They just discovered hammocks. And cigarettes. If I washed up in San Salvador I wouldn’t be like “oooh, I wonder what these are for?” I WOULD LIE DOWN IN THE HAMMOCK and then smoke a cigarette (did they give people the cancer in...
